#292 – Baby It’s Cold Outside

So Christmas may not exactly be the best timing for this topic, many may see it as killing the happy joy joy buzz, but this song really kicked my head into a gear that I may not have the courage or strength to delve into again, so, sorry not sorry.

Over the past few years there has been so much controversy over this song, it simply makes my head spin. The #MeToo movement, which is a cause that I am personally vested in, is a wonderful and much needed awareness and call to speak up and talk about the sexual assault and abuse that we have experienced. This is a topic that needs to be talked about, it is important.

That being said, while there are always two sides to a coin, this topic is more like the Dungeons & Dragons 20 sided dice. For the sake of my own sanity and yours I am going to try and limit myself to two of them, maybe three.

#1 No, is no. Period. Point blank, the end !

Lets make no mistake about that. If a person, male or female, says NO, that means exactly what it means. Full stop. It does not matter if you are in a relationship, or even if you have been married for 20 years, NO, is NO. If the person is too young, or too incapacitated to say NO, then the default is still NO !

I do not care if you are balls deep and been pounding away for the last 30 minutes, it is still perfectly okay to still say NO, and as of that moment, all consent, is revoked.

#2 It’s OKAY to say YES !

This is the flip side of that coin. The ‘false rape’ allegations, where the person had indeed consented but then later, when others found out about it, claimed that it was rape.

How many jump to blame and point the finger at, usually a girl, who “cried rape” when she got ‘caught’. Shame on YOU , and I don’t mean the girl.

Society, is to blame for that crap. Most, but not all, cases of false rape claims are the result of a girl trying to save herself from becoming a victim of societies judgemental moralism. GOD FORBID, she be allowed the right to say YES, because saying yes, brings shame to you and your family and makes you a slut.

So that brings me full circle to why this song brought about the gears that got wound when I decided to do this post. While the uproar about this song is claiming that it is about being coerced or assaulted, take a look at the lyrics.

My mother will start to worry
My father will be pacing the floor
The neighbors might think
My sister will be suspicious
My brother will be there at the door
My maiden aunt’s mind is vicious

She isn’t saying she has to go because she isn’t interested in staying, but because of what everyone else is going to think if she stays.

Now for a little history trivia lesson for the happy happy joy joy part !

In 1944, Frank Loesser wrote “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” to sing with his wife, Lynn Garland, at their housewarming party in New York City at the Navarro Hotel. They sang the song to indicate to guests that it was time to leave. Garland wrote that after the first performance, “We became instant parlor room stars. We got invited to all the best parties for years on the basis of ‘Baby.’ It was our ticket to caviar and truffles. Parties were built around our being the closing act.” In 1948, after years of performing the song, Loesser sold it to MGM for the 1949 romantic comedy Neptune’s Daughter. Garland was furious: “I felt as betrayed as if I’d caught him in bed with another woman.” The song won the 1949 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

And now for my favorite video of this song, from THE MUPPETS SHOW of all places !
